Pope Francis is in Canada this week. He will meet with Indigenous people, residential school survivors and Catholics in Alberta, Quebec and Iqaluit.

Francis’s first formal event since arriving in Canada will start when he arrives in Maskwacis, a community of four First Nations about an hour south of Edmonton. Maskwacis means “bear hills” in Cree. Shortly after, he will visit the site of the former Ermineskin Indian Residential School, which was one of the largest in Canada.
