Just before 10 a.m., Francis appeared in the popemobile, a 2015 Jeep Wrangler driven by Vatican security, and made a “giro,” or tour among the people, with a lap around the stadium. He waved to a throng of guests in the stands and on the field, and the crowd erupted as he stopped to kiss the children of a few willing parents.
“It’s my faith, right? Pretty much, for me, that’s Jesus right there,” he said. “I’m here to hear what he says and open my heart.” “We are children of a history that needs to be preserved,” a translator for Francis said in English. “We are not isolated individuals, nor islands. No one comes into this world detached from others. Our roots, the love that awaited us and welcomed us into this world, the families in which we grew up, are part of a unique history that preceded us and gave us life.”Article content
