Tom Everett Scott recalls his role in ‘That Thing You Do’. Now, his fictional band has reunited
Tom Everett Scott remembers the first time he heard That Thing You Do, the title track from the 1996 movie of the same name – the writing and directorial debut of Tom Hanks. Already cast as the drummer of fictional band The Wonders, Everett Scott was in Los Angeles filming a sitcom when Hanks called him into a recording studio.
After a basic first lesson on the drums – “The stuff that five-year-olds learn,” he laughs – Everett Scott was about to listen to the song when the doors swung open. In walked Hollywood’s “Drum Doctor”, Ross Garfield, bringing with him not only a beautiful 1964 Ludwig drum kit but also the industry legend Jimmy Keltner, session drummer for Bob Dylan, Neil Young and the former Beatles.
“I thought: ‘What is happening?’” Everett Scott tells me. “They played the song, then sat me down behind this drum kit, and said: ‘Go ahead!’ I was like: ‘Go ahead what?’ Here’s one of the most famous actors in the world and one of the most famous drummers in the world, and I don’t know what I’m doing!”..A subscription gives you full digital access to all Times Select content.
