Poor Gavin Williamson, he never did understand the role of chief whip ✍️ KateMaltby for ipaperviews
When Gavin Williamson became secretary for defence in 2017, his office arranged a series of routine meetings with backbench Conservative MPs. Cabinet members are expected to familiarise themselves with their colleagues’ concerns; such meetings can be a chance to touch base with MPs whose constituencies host military infrastructure, for example, or who have served in the forces.
Not that you’d detect anything prosaic about Williamson’s attempt to memorialise each engagement. After one such meeting discussing local matters, the moment came for an official photograph for the constituency newsletter. As one person present remembers: “Suddenly, Gavin produces this map of North Korea, wants it spread out on a table, and suggests we take a photo of us all studying the terrain like we’re planning an invasion.” His visitors asked if they could just do a handshake instead.
But Williamson always had a fondness for props. The whip had long adorned his office, along with his famous tarantula, Cronus. Three people remembered Williamson’s early delight on becoming defence secretary at playing around during meetings with a sword gifted to him in that capacity by a Gulf state., two weeks into the job.
