Polo Becerra, a Mexican immigrant, lived his American Dream in Houston as chef and owner of Houston’s iconic Post Oak Grill.

Polo Becerra, a Mexican immigrant who eventually became the owner and chef of Houston’s Post Oak Grill, has died.. Becerra’s son and an employee at Post Oak Grill did not elaborate but confirmed his death over the phone.Over a span of nearly 30 years, Becerra fulfilled what he has described in the past as his American Dream.

He built a following with this cooking: a signature crab cake was served with a housemade smoked chipotle remoulade and pasta dishes would incorporate ingredients from Italy. In 1990, Becerra came to Houston to work on his cooking skills and improve his English. He didn’t plan to live here for more than a few months but the city’s growing dining scene enticed him to stay for good.

By 2002, Becerra teamed up with another investor to buy the restaurant from Manfred Jachmich, who had also opened a downtown location of Post Oak Grill. Within two years, Becerra bought out his business partner.
