Springbok flyhalf Handre Pollard’s latest performance for the Leicester Tigers is a massive news story for SA rugby in 2023, according to MARK KEOHANE.
“I know the year is only 15 days old, but every time Pollard plays a club match it is a big story, and when survives the combat it is an even bigger story. But the biggest is when there are signs of Pollard, the 2019 World Cup winner,” he writes.
“Pollard, at international level, has always been the preferred Bok starter at No 10. In 2022 he struggled for the first time, with inconsistent and uninspiring performances. “When injury prematurely ended his international season, others were given the chance to play at No 10, among them Damian Willemse and Manie Libbok. Both DHL Stormers backs sizzled in the position and for some, Pollard’s name became an afterthought.“[Against Clermont] Pollard kicked four conversions and two penalties and physically was strong in every challenge. It was such good news because Pollard’s international club career has been more about injury than inspiration.
“He moved to Montpellier post the 2019 World Cup and played in 25 percent of the club’s matches in his four-year stay. “He arrived at Leicester injured from the Rugby Championship and when he did finally make his Premiership debut, he lasted just 20 minutes.Photo: David Rogers/Getty Images
