Following Mozambique’s national elections, ongoing political protests led by claims of electoral fraud have caused disruptions at the Lebombo Port of Entry. The Border Management Authority (BMA) has advised truck drivers to opt for alternative routes as only pedestrians and light motor vehicles are being processed.

Operations at the Lebombo Port of Entry have been affected again due to ongoing political protests in Mozambique following the national elections. Mozambique’s Frelimo Party won the elections, leading to claims of electoral fraud and subsequent protests. The Border Management Authority (BMA) commissioner, Dr Michael Masiapato, stated that the disruption at the border means that only pedestrians and light motor vehicles can be processed.

The BMA is recommending truck drivers to use alternative routes. Mozambican customs officials have informed the BMA and SARS that protests are partially blocking the road between the Ressano Garcia Port of Entry and the Maputo Harbour, making the road inaccessible. Despite the presence of the Mozambican Defence Force and police, the situation is not expected to improve until around 16:00 today, pending further developments
