THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Police Service is warning the public of a possible “grandparent scam” campaign they say may involve local fraudsters targeting Thunder Bay residents.

In a recent case reported to the TBPS, a fraudster allegedly called a local number claiming to be the victim’s grandchild and saying they needed thousands of dollars to post bail after being involved in a motor vehicle accident. “Police believe the individuals operating the scam may be in Thunder Bay, and may request to meet their targets in-person,” the TBPS said in a statement released Tuesday. “This is both unique and troubling.”

Police encourage anyone who receives a similar call to hang up and attempt to reach the person or other family members to verify the story.
