Calgary police say officers took a stabbing victim to hospital early Saturday morning as no ambulances were available at the time.

Police were called to the 700 block of 8 Street S.W. around 5 a.m. for reports of a stabbing.Staff Sgt. John Guigon with the Calgary Police Service said there had been some sort of confrontation in the parking lot of the convenience store at that address between the victim and another person who arrived in a vehicle.

“When we arrived, he was in fairly serious condition, profuse bleeding, etc.,” said Guigon. “We did first aid and we were unfortunately told that EMS was in a red alert situation — they couldn’t respond — so we had to rush him to Foothills.”Adam Loria with Calgary EMS said crews were dispatched to that address just before 5 a.m., and that nobody at the scene required medical services.

The email said Calgary police cancelled its request to EMS at 5:06 a.m., 10 minutes after the initial 911 call.
