Police insisted on Friday that there have been no local threats, but they nonetheless increased patrols

While police insisted on Friday that there have been no local threats, they nonetheless increased patrols around the city’s mosques on Friday, hours after dozens of people were killed in shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.

As a result of the senseless attacks in #Christchurch , I have issued this letter to our @ottawacity community and faith leaders this morning. #OneCommunity pic.twitter.com/ita6AOOmewYes we have increased our presence after the horrible attacks in New Zealand. We also want our community to feel safe in Gatineau. Thank you for your message and for caring about your friends and neighbours.

Mayor Jim Watson said he will be sending a letter of condolence to New Zealand’s high commissioner, but there is no plan for a book of condolences at city hall. The National Council of Canadian Muslims organized a vigil at the Human Rights Monument on Elgin Street for the victims of the mosque shootings.

“Christchurch may be far away but the hatred that caused this attack is not,” said Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario president and CEO Alex Munter. “This morning, I think about Muslim friends, neighbours and co-workers here in Ottawa who will worry for themselves and their families.”
