Berea SAPS Crime Prevention members serving a protection order seized three unlicensed firearms and ammunition from a respondent in Milne Road, Berea. The suspect was unable to produce licenses for the weapons or explain their origin.

ON Friday, Berea SAPS Crime Prevention members proceeded to serve a protection order to a respondent in Milne Road, Berea. The order stated that the respondent was a licensed firearm owner and that his licensed firearm had to be seized and kept for safekeeping. The police member then noticed a packet inside the safe and requested to examine the packet because the respondent was 'behaving nervously'.

'Upon searching the packet, one Norinco 9mm pistol with 54 live rounds of ammunition; two unique 22 pistols with 44 rounds of ammunition; and one Rossi 38 special revolver with 17 rounds were found to be in the packet.''The suspect was asked to produce the licences for the firearms and ammunition, but he failed to produce any of the licences for being in possession of the firearms and ammunition.

'We commend the Berea SAPS Crime Prevention Unit on being thorough when executing the protection order to ensure the safety of not only the applicant but also the community of Berea. Keeping or being in possession of an unlicensed firearm or ammunition is a serious offence, which if proven guilty will ensure a hefty sentence by our courts of law.
