Police said they think Mark Eugene Warfel, 89, killed his wife a few years ago, in addition to the teen who vanished decades ago. The revelations came during a competency hearing Friday for burglary charges.

awaiting trial on burglary charges officially is under investigation for the 1989 disappearance of 17-year-old Tracy Kroh.

Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo said he was deciding if his office would appeal Evan’s ruling but was not clear if Warfel would immediately be released from State Correctional Institution Laurel Highlands, where he is being held at the request of Dauphin County because of his age and medical needs.

Warfel has been held on $25,000 bail since September 2019 after police said he repeatedly broke into a woman’s home and harassed her beginning the same day police searched his property in Jackson Township in connection to Kroh’s disappearance a few months earlier. Psychologist Rene Tallichet testified Friday that he examined Warfel in late 2019 and determined Warfel suffered from major neurocognitive disorder, commonly referred to as dementia. This impairs Warfel’s memory and cognition enough that he is not capable of participating in his own defense as Constitutionally required, he said.During the hearing, Warfel sat in a DOC-issued wheelchair.

Mistick was called to the stand to rebut the idea that Warfel was not competent and to support the argument that he was faking his mental illness.
