A police incident that prompted a ferry en route to Tsawwassen to return to Nanaimo’s Duke Point on Thursday evening resulted in cancellation of afternoon and evening sailings on that route on Friday.Nanaimo RCMP said when the vehicle was on the ferry Thursday evening, its occupants were “causing concern for the staff and employees.” Police boarded the Coastal Inspiration just after 9 p.m., said Const. Gary O’Brien.
He said police followed up on information from CCTV cameras, witness statements and taxis waiting at the ferry that the missing man may have walked off the ferry and left in a taxi. The other ship that operates on the run, the Coastal Renaissance, couldn’t dock and was stuck offshore, Marshall said. Crew and passengers had to remain on board for over two hours.While fresh crews were brought in Friday morning, crew members involved in the incident had been scheduled to be back on duty Friday afternoon, and replacements were not available, she said.
