Police have busted an MTN OTP scam syndicate in Johannesburg, South Africa where an illegal call centre was used to for criminal operations.

The South African Police collaborated with MTN to arrest several members of an OTP scam syndicate operating in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg.

The South African Police Services have busted a large criminal syndicate that was targeting MTN customers with OTP scams, sometimes stealing thousands of Rands in airtime and data from unsuspecting victims. MTN says that the Commercial Crimes Units was able to obtain search warrants necessary to raid five total properties in Eldorado Park in the Johannesburg area after initial investigations found cause. These properties were allegedly used as front businesses, suppliers, and even call centres where criminals would conduct OTP scam operations.

MTN says that OTP scams is one of the most “prevalent fraudulent tactics in the telecommunication industry.” “He then asked me to confirm a few things and told me to check if I had received an SMS with a pin and that I must confirm the pin to him for Security Purposes.’ I then laughed and told him to ‘F off’ after I realised he was trying to hack my account.”
