A police chase that began in the city of Chicago made its way to the suburbs on Tuesday.
Around 4 p.m., the male suspects fled to the River Oaks Center shopping mall inwhere they ditched their vehicle right outside the front entrance and ran inside, authorities said.
The mall was placed on lockdown as police canvassed the property for more than an hour looking for the men. Sources say the suspects changed clothes inside the mall, allowing them to blend in with patrons.Chicago police were initially pursuing the men on the city's South Side. The vehicle involved — reportedly a Volkswagen minivan — was said to be going 100 miles per hour down the Bishop Ford Expressway. The three suspects were still at large as of Tuesday night.
In November, a jewelry store security guard at River Oaks was shot and killed during an attempted robbery. Robin Collazo and Della Williamson have owned a store at the mall for 20 years. They say the ongoing crime is impacting business, but that it’s not just a problem in the south suburbs. Oak Brook and Woodfield malls have had lockdowns, too. Collazo says it’s now happening on a regular basis — statewide.
