Police were called on a report of trespassing at a Vestavia Hills home. The group gathered outside the home “appeared to be a small protest related to the mining industry,” Capt. Shane Ware said.
Phil Smith, executive assistant to the president/chief of staff of United Mine Workers of America confirmed that some of the group’s members and families “held a prayer vigil” outside a home in the neighborhood.About 1,100 miners with the United Mine Workers of America walked off the job in Tuscaloosa County back on April 1, 2021, seeking better pay and benefits. The strike, now in its 20th month, is believed to be the longest strike in Alabama history.
Both the union and the company have traded accusations of violence and vandalism over the last two years. In March,to a Warrior Met Coal natural gas pipeline that authorities believe was done by an explosive device. Earlier this month, Tuscaloosa police were called to investigate several vehicles were damaged at Tuscaloosa’s North River Yacht Club in an incident that police sai may be related to the ongoing Warrior Met Coal strike.
