The penalty for using a mobile phone while driving is six points and a £200 fine, police said
Emergency services were called to reports of a serious collision on the southbound carriageway in Lancashire last night . All traffic was stopped between J32 and J31a near Preston at around 7pm.
There were long delays and five miles of congestion in the area following the incident. Lane closures were in place for several hours to allow for recovery and investigation works, LancsLive reports.National Highways North West said the incident was cleared at around 9.30pm and all lanes had reopened, however there was still 30 minute delays in the area. Lancs Road Police posted at 8.16pm to say that they had stopped a Range Rover for trying to record a video of a crash scene.
A post on X read: "Having released traffic held at the scene of an injury collision on M6 southbound, this driver was seen driving whilst holding their mobile phone to record a video of the scene. Using a mobile phone whilst driving is an offence. Driver stopped and reported." One X user commented: "Hopefully they go to court and are not offered an educational course - disgusting behaviour". Lancs Road Police replied: "We don’t offer an alternative to prosecution for using a mobile phone whilst driving. The driver faces 6 points and £200 fine if convicted."
