A man is dead, and an officer is on administrative leave after a shooting in Bay Minette.
A Bay Minette police officer shot and killed a suspect Saturday, police said.
The Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit, which is investigating the incident, said the police officer fought with the suspect on two occasions after the suspect became combative during a traffic stop. The suspect wrestled the officer’s Taser away from the officer and began using the Taser on the officer.The incident began about 10:25 a.m. when the officer stopped Otis French Jr. on Lower Street in Bay Minette.
The major crimes unit said French exited the vehicle but refused to comply with instructions from the officer. French became combative, the major crimes unit said, and he and the officer began fighting. The officer was pushed to the ground and French fled the scene. The officer caught up to French and attempted to Taser him but it was ineffective. French and the officer began fighting again, according to authorities. During the scuffle, French seized the Taser from the officer and began using the Taser on the officer, law enforcement said.
At that point, the officer shot French, the major crimes unit said. French died at a local hospital. The officer was treated for minor injuries and released.
