The new “missing middle” policy unveiled this week contemplates allowing buildings that are taller, going from two storeys to three, and bigger, increasing the density allowed on the site, also known as floor-space ratio, or FSR.Article content The goal isn’t to encourage larger single detached houses, said Paula Huber, a senior planner with the city. The increased floor-space ratios would only apply to newly built multiplexes, and wouldn’t allow current homeowners to build additions to their existing homes.
These multiplex homes could be less expensive than new houses or duplexes, Huber said, but “it’s not a substitute for other types of lower cost or truly more affordable housing, like rental.”
