Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust bosses say they will be cancelling the service
Bosses at the UK's largest NHS health trust have been slammed by staff and patients over plans to axe an 'essential' shuttle bus service linking hospitals.
Free for staff buses run Monday to Friday from MFT's Oxford Road campus, home to Manchester Royal Infirmary, the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and Saint Mary's, to Trafford General Hospital and Wythenshawe. In a memo to staff referenced in the petition, MFT bosses cited 'significant financial pressures' being faced by the trust and said the shuttle bus service would end on August 2. They said it was initially intended to shuttle staff between the sites for meetings, but was now 'overwhelmingly being used as a commuting service'.
"Unreliable transportation affects our ability to arrive at work on time. Patients depend on our timely presence for appointments, treatments, and emergencies. The petition has attracted dozens of comments. One poster said: "Some of our lowest paid workers and patients use this bus. Public transport in Manchester is appalling, so it seems all the more disappointing there was no consultation.""Such a reliable help in stressful situations. Always efficient and helpful. For elderly patients to have this excellent transport is wonderful. Please rethink this decision and retain the shuttle bus.
