Rishi Sunak plans to ban the illegitimate use of laughing gas by making it a Class C drug as part of a wider clampdown on anti-social behaviour AlannahFrancis1 and RichardVaughan1 report

The supply of nitrous oxide for recreational use is already illegal and dealers can face up to seven years in prison. But police chiefs have welcomed the new plans to equip them with more powers to apprehend people misusing nitrous oxide.

“Officers would welcome the ability to seize and dispose of nitrous oxide, as well as provide warnings and carry out arrests, depending on the situation.

Mr Sunak has defended the crackdown on laughing gas, telling members of the public in Essex, where he officially launched the plan: “I think, quite frankly, I and almost everyone else is just sick of having to deal with nitrous oxides canisters when they’re walking through their communities. , which the former home secretary Priti Patel asked to consider whether unlawful possession of nitrous oxide should be made an offence.
