Here is how the Department of Home Affairs plans to eliminate the need for people to visit its branches in-person.
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has outlined his department’s phased approach to digital transformation, which will see the Department of Home Affairs implement digital systems and partner with more banks in South Africa.from Inkatha Freedom Party MP Busaphi Machi. Schreiber said his department’s digital transformation will enhance efficiency and improve service delivery.
Schreiber added that the changes will ensure improved data security through biometrics, while the Trusted Tour Operator and Trusted Employer Schemes will reduce fraud risks. — replacing outdated manual processes with digital systems such as the Digital Identity Framework and Electronic Travel Authorisation. Critically, this phase will include the adoption of biometrics to facilitate quick, secure identification.— more partnerships with banks and other institutions to allow DHA services to reach citizens even in remote areas without costly branch expansions.
“It is only possible for someone to steal an ID number or engage in fraudulent activity like swapping out photos because the system has gaps that allow for human intervention,” said Schreiber. If successful, this will eliminate the need for people to visit Home Affairs branches for routine transactions and free up staff to devote their time to serving those who need it most.
