Move over Debonairs, there is a new pizza guy in town. Themba Limekhaya, of the Vaal township in Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg, is selling delicious home-made pizzas from his shack – and his customers are loving every bite.
Limekhaya launched Mkhukhu Pizza in December. The news spread like wildfire in the township when two young boys in his street tasted the pizza and shared the experience on Facebook. Now people from Midrand, Centurion and Vanderbijlpark get in their cars to drive all the way there to get a meal.Initially, they could not believe that someone was selling pizzas from a shack, says Limekhaya.
While a small pizza at established outlets normally costs about R50, he sells his for R20. He charges R55 for a large pizza, which customers normally pay about R100 for. But the biggest problem is electricity; this load shedding [affects my business]! Once I lost nine orders due to the electricity [outage]. If I could get one of those pizza wood stoves, then I would be able to take more orders. But I do not have the money for that.
