The preponderance of reality shows in Ten's new lineup is as disappointing as it is predictable. Some of it is so contrived that despite the gimmicky appeal of the concepts it's hard to see viewers demanding a repeat performance.
For all those caveats, let's give praise to 10 for having a go. Putting new shows on television is expensive and risky, which is why the schedule is jam-packed with formats that have been tried and tested elsewhere first. These shows are, for the most part, genuinely new, and for that the network should be applauded. That said, the preponderance of reality is as disappointing as it is predictable.
In fairness, it's less the concept than the pairings, which again seem contrived for maximum artificial drama rather than anything approaching insight. The second you see Thalia – a vision of botox, silicon and falsies of every flavour – you just know she's going to move in with 80-year-old jazz drummer John. It makes for some cheap laughs, but it makes no sense.
