The Farmers' Almanac said it published 20 signs that a harsh winter is ahead in 1978 and those signs 'are still relevant today.'
Folklore has it that the wider the orange band is on a woolly bear caterpillar, the milder the winter ahead will be.
That and other wildlife habits and signs in nature and weather phenomenon are woven into the fabric of weather forecasting folklore. These tales, of course, predate the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, satellites, weather balloons, models, charts, computers, radar and the National Weather Service.in 1978 “and it is still relevant today.”
The list was curated by meteorologist Dick Goddard, “Cleveland weather guru” and a friend of Farmers’ Almanac Editor Ray Geiger, the publication said.that predicts “traditional cool temperatures and snowy weather conditions” will return. For the Northeast, we can expect “lots of rain/sleet and snowstorms to contend with.”Woolly bear caterpillars with a wide orange band predict a mild winter, according to folklore.

The signs of a hard winter ahead range from the arrival and departure of some species, the height of nests and actions of some animals including:Snowy owls arriving early, geese and ducks leaving early and Monarch butterflies migrating early
