OTTAWA—Four by-elections seen as a temperature check on the state of federal politics ended Monday.
In 2021 her vote plunged, and Bernier’s People’s Party of Canada was the beneficiary, with the PPC candidate having the party’s best showing of anywhere in the country in the rural Manitoba seat — 21.6 per cent. His daughter was among those also running for the nomination, and the ensuing nomination battle was so bitter that MacKenzie ended up campaigning for the Liberals.
In Quebec, Anna Gainey, former president of the Liberal party, was hoping for a win in the Montreal riding of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce—Westmount, left vacant by former cabinet minister Marc Garneau. Over in Manitoba, Ben Carr, son of former Liberal cabinet minister Jim Carr, was trying to win the riding of Winnipeg South Centre, which his father had represented from 2015 until his death last year.
