Last Post Fund helps cover the cost of funeral and burial as well as grave markers for Canadian veterans.Pictou County’s Marg Boutilier wants more people to know about a program many may be eligible for but not aware of called Last Post Fund.Last Post will help cover the funeral costs of the deceased and even for grave markers. She first heard about it on a radio program in the ‘90s and immediately thought of her father-in-law who had passed away about a decade before.
Bob Carter is president of the Nova Scotia Chapter of the Last Post Fund and said they would love for more people to know about the fund and how they can help.He said it is open to the families of all Canadian veterans and they give a broad definition to 'veteran'. So for instance, if someone was in the British military and retired to Canada or if you were a Canadian who served in the British army, the fund would still apply.“A lot of people qualify who don't think they would qualify, so we always encourage people to apply,” he said.
Families are supposed to apply within a year of their loved one’s death, but Carter said there are, at times, exceptions.
