“One day, we dropped in to see our friend, John Marshall, at his antique store on Provost Street in New Glasgow,” says Laurie. “We got chatting about the history of our house and he mentioned that he had a bound volume of original issues of The Bee newspaper, which James Dawson had published in Pictou in the mid-1830s.”

Laurie was able to contribute a brief historical overview of the town which provides context for MacKenzie's watercolours of Pictou's heritage buildings. The book was titled Pictou town. MacKenzie is especially interested in capturing the character of Pictou’s old buildings, as well as their meanings and stories. She lets these venerable structures speak to her while she wonders about how they once interacted with the wider community and the people who lived, worked or worshipped in them. As an artist, she approaches built heritage without preconceptions and lets her watercolours flow freely, taking on a life of their own.

“It was quite overwhelming,” John said. “There was standing room only. The community was extremely supportive.”
