The four-year-old program will see its first class of 22 physicianeers graduate on Saturday and move on to their medical residencies.

The “physicianeers” fromThe gowns, which tie in the back and, are designed so staff can put them on someone who is immobile or unconscious. But most patients are capable of dressing themselves, ENMED student Priya Arunachalam said.

The ENMED program, which launched in 2019, will see its first class of 22 physicianeers graduate on Saturday and move on to their medical residencies. Its leadership believes they’ll be the first of a new kind of doctor who will be equipped to devise ways to improve the health care industry — and put those plans into action.

It’s a challenge that students like Arunachalam are willing to take on. The Austin native earned a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins University and co-founded a company that provides refrigerated shipping containers to transport food in sub-Saharan Africa. The ENMED program was an opportunity to continue innovating as she attended medical school.

Patel, who earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at Southern Methodist University, plans to remain involved in the clinical trial because she’s staying at Houston Methodist for a residency in internal medicine. Fellow graduate Frederick Wang, 25, and his classmates worked together to modernize the endoscope, which doctors use to look inside the body. Using an endoscope can strain a doctor’s hands, leading to problems like carpal tunnel syndrome, Wang said.

Pettigrew said the students’ dual curriculum allows them to essentially be bilingual, speaking the language of an engineer and a doctor at the same time. Arunachalam agreed, saying it’s a major advantage as they consider ways to improve the workplace.
