Iraq’s water plight – the drought between two rivers by Susan Schulman, Daily Maverick October 5, 2022 Ninety-one percent of Iraq’s water originates in Turkey, Iran and Syria, leaving the country at the mercy of those controlling the taps upstream. Accompanied by a translator and fixer, I set out, travelling northwards from the very south, across the country, to explore the impact of these combined forces on those most directly affected – and what that might forebode.

I’m A Changed Man, Nigeria's Hushpuppi Vows to Pay Back MillionsConvicted fraudster Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi, has pledged to make full restitution as he expressed regrets and apologies for his actions in the letter he sent to the judge, ahead of his sentencing in November. Hushpuppi is awaiting sentencing by a United States court. He apologised to the victims of his crimes, law enforcement agencies, U.S. government's lawyers, and the judge handling his case. He expressed his willingness to pay full restitution of U.S.$1.7 million to all victims including those from whom he claimed not to have derived any gain. Hushpuppi participated in scams that resulted in losses of U.S.$24 million to the victims. He was arrested in Dubai in June 2020 alongside 12 other people who were part of the scam. The Dubai police later handed them over to the FBI in the U.S., where he was arraigned on charges of conspiracy to launder money, among others. In August 2021, U.S. film company, Will Packer Productions, and Nigeria's Mo Abudu's EbonyLife Studios acquired rights to make a movie based on Bloomberg's article about Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi, titled Bloomberg article, The Fall of the Billionaire Gucci Master.

Nigerian Govt Files Suit Against Facebook, Instagram Over AdvertsThe Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria has filed a legal case against Meta Platforms Incorporated, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, accusing the company of rendering unapproved advert materials in the country and demanding up to U.S.$70 million as damages. The advertising regulator says the company should pay up because they failed to get adverts on the social media platforms vetted by the government before publishing. In previous social media crackdowns, the government suspended Twitter on June 4, 2021, after the company deleted President Muhammadu Buhari's tweet. it accused the company of allowing content that threatened Nigeria's security. Nigerian officials denied that the ban was in retaliation for deleting the president's tweet. The ban was lifted after ignoring public outcry for months.
