Sarah Laurel is known and admired across Pennsylvania for helping people survive addiction and find recovery.
Editor’s note: PennLive spent much of 2022 trying to understand the opioid overdose crisis, which has returned to Pennsylvania with a vengeance. We focused on questions including what caused the surge, what did we do right and wrong in earlier efforts to fight the epidemic, and what else should we do. We interviewed experts and regular people and attended hearings and rallies.
Then she grew dependent on Percocet prescribed for carpal tunnel. As her need grew, she began buying it on the street and her career and life spiraled downward. That was the turning point, filling her with determination to not only recover, but to devote her life to helping others rebuild their lives.
When Laurel was finally ready for recovery, she found it through a 12-step recovery fellowship. She knew something about 12-step programs, having a grandfather who achieved 40 years of sobriety through alcoholics anonymous.
