The Philippines plans to buy the US Typhon missile system to protect its maritime interests, a move China condemned as potentially triggering an arms race in the region.
The Philippines announced its plan to acquire the United States Typhon missile system to bolster its maritime security, prompting warnings from China about an escalating arms race in the region. The US Army deployed the mid-range missile system in the northern Philippines earlier this year for joint military exercises and decided to leave it there despite objections from Beijing.
Philippine Army chief Lieutenant-General Roy Galido stated that the missile system aligns with the country's archipelagic defense strategy and is crucial for protecting Philippine sovereignty. The acquisition cost will be determined based on economic feasibility. The presence of the US missile launcher has angered China, which has engaged in increasing confrontations with the Philippines over disputed reefs and waters in the South China Sea. China asserts nearly the entire South China Sea despite an international ruling that its claim lacks legal basis. Manila and Washington, long-standing treaty allies, have strengthened their defense cooperation since Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos took office in 2022. China condemned the decision to acquire the Typhon system, calling it a provocative and dangerous move that could trigger a regional arms race.
