Tensions have escalated between Manila and Beijing following recent skirmishes in the South China Sea.
SINGAPORE – Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said on May 31 that the presence of the United States was “crucial to regional peace”, as his nation faces growing Chinese pressure in waters off its coastline.
He also denounced what he described as illegal, coercive and aggressive actions being taken in the disputed South China Sea. Given its position in the South China Sea and proximity to self-ruled Taiwan, which China claims as its own, Philippine support would be crucial for the US in the event of any conflict.
