Even based on outdated counts in Saskatoon and Regina, Saskatchewan's $40-million strategy seems inadequate for a growing crisis.
Saskatchewan’s provincial government plans to spend $40 million over the next two years to address homelessness in the province.includes adding 120 new emergency shelter spaces, 30 shelter spaces for people with complex needs, such as those suffering from chronic addiction, and 155 new supportive housing units. That sounds like it would go a long way to address the homeless problem — if we were only talking about Saskatchewan’s largest city, Saskatoon.
In light of these numbers — from just the province’s two largest cities, mind you — the provincial government’s response seems markedly inadequate. At the same announcement in Saskatoon on Friday, attended by Saskatoon Mayor Charlie Clark and Regina Mayor Sandra Masters, the province also introduced a new strategy to address addictions that promises to add 500 new treatment spaces.
