Manchester City have begun the new season as many had expected, winning both of their opening Premier League games and the Super Cup against Sevilla, looking as comfortable as always in both.
Despite the young player’s versatility, it appears that Foden is much more effective for City when applied through the heart of the midfield. This position allows him to thread his intelligent passes through to the Cityzens’ front line, his rise could help solve Pep’s attacking-midfield dilemma - eradicating any issues raised by Kevin De Bruyne’s absence.
The new role of Julian Alvarez in the Sky Blues' starting XI has also really helped Foden settle into his new midfield role, with the slightly deeper-sitting centre forward’s intelligent play assisting the Englishman in bringing out his best game. As Foden elaborated on while speaking about Alvarez’s goal vs Newcastle:“I managed to pick up some good space, Kova saw me, and I’ve seen Julian early - he has this instinct for goal, in and around the box he’s ruthless.
This season gives the young player a real opportunity to prove to Pep Guardiola that De Bruyne isn’t as irreplaceable as he may seem, with the Belgian already 32 years old and suffering increasing numbers of injury problems season by season. If Foden can continue his early-season rapport with Alvarez, he could even make the position his own.
