It has been a tense few days for the South African political milieu following the Section 89 Phala Phala report scandal: Resignations, legal reviews, and second terms. Here's the story:
It emerged on Thursday that Ramaphosa was intending to resign after the independent panel led by former chief justice, Sandile Ngcobo, released the report. It has since been reported by people familiar with the matter that President Cyril Ramaphosa has advised his confidants that he has changed his mind and will not be resigning.
“It may be in the long-term interest and sustainability of our constitutional democracy, well beyond the Ramaphosa presidency, that such a clearly flawed report is challenged, especially when it’s being used to remove a sitting head of state,” says president spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya.
