“These players have made their choice for their own financial-based reasons,” PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan wrote. “But they can’t demand the same PGA Tour membership benefits, considerations, opportunities and platform as you.”

Updated: Jun. 09, 2022, 9:41 a.m. |Phil Mickelson, left, played in the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational at the Centurion Club outside London Thursday, triggering an indefinite suspension by the PGA Tour. Just as the first round of the first LIV Tour event teed off in London, the PGA Tour announced it is indefinitely suspending any member players who participated in the Saudi Arabia-backed rival league.

Seventeen players were named in a letter released by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, including Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, all former major champions. Johnson, Garcia, Oosthuizen and Schwartzel are among several golf veterans who have resigned from the PGA Tour, though Mickelson is still technically an active player.

“These players have made their choice for their own financial-based reasons,” Monahan wrote. “But they can’t demand the same PGA Tour membership benefits, considerations, opportunities and platform as you. The expectation disrespects you, our fans and our partners.”PGA Tour suspends current and future LIV players.
