Frik Potgieter from George and Peter Huxham from Langebaan were arrested in February last year after officials found drugs in their luggage, days after luxury assets of Equatorial Guinea’s Vice-President Teodore Nguema Obiang were seized in South Africa. The families of Potgieter and Huxham say they were ‘illegally arrested and imprisoned’ on ‘fake drug charges’. The two men were working for an oil and gas company at the time.

‘Frik and Peter are innocent of these charges and have been caught in a diplomatic battle between South Africa and Equatorial Guinea.’ ‘Tragically, Frik and Peter are political pawns, being held as state hostages in retaliation for South Africa’s seizure of the Vice President of Equatorial Guinea’s luxury assets. They are innocent and were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.’

‘They need to be brought home, and in order to do that, the families need the South African and UK governments to do all they can to get them released.’
