Ottawa—While the national economic picture is starting to look better after three bumpy years, do not become too optimistic about how 2023 will play out for the agrifood sector, advises J.P. Gervais, Farm Credit Canada’s chief economist.
Interest rates climbed to levels not seen in many years while supply chains sought to put pandemic challenges behind them. Elevated commodity prices supported farm income but were also the source of profitability challenges throughout the agrifood industry. Still farmers should have fairly positive margins, he said. A big question hangs over the 2022 wheat harvest of which 34 per cent is still in storage in Canada and who the buyers for it will be.
