There are certain changes in circumstances that must be reported to the DWP as soon as possible.

The latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions show that in July 2023 there were 6.1 million people claiming Universal Credit. The means-tested benefit is a payment designed to help people on a low income, out of work, or if they cannot work due to ill health or caring responsibilities.

Changes that need to be reported include getting a new mobile number or email address, switching to a different bank account, moving address and your rent going up or down. DWP guidance on GOV.UK warns: “You could be taken to court or have to pay a penalty if you give wrong information or do not report a change in your circumstances.”
