The Conservative leadership hopeful has won the backing of industry-funded campaign group FairFuel UK after making the pledge
Political ReporterPenny Mordaunt has promised to cut fuel duty by 50 per cent to help people “struggling to get to work and school” as she set out details of her bid to become the next prime minister.
The Tory leadership candidate, whose tagline is that leadership “needs to become a little less about the leader and a lot more about the ship”, pledged the VAT cut would be in place until at least April 2023.The former Cabinet minister has won the backing of industry-funded campaign group FairFuelUK, which said she would have a “common sense” approach to climate incentives and cost of living pressures.
FairFuelUK is part-funded by the Road Haulage Association and has received money from the RAC, Logistics UK and fuel company UKLPG. Howard Cox, Founder of FairFuelUK, said Ms Mordaunt had been a “staunch and loyal backer of UK’s 37m drivers”. He added: “I have known her for 12 years and truly believe she will deliver on the need for lower and fairer fuel taxation.”
