Former Halifax junior player Ed Hickey recalls his heart attack during recreational hockey game in Bedford

– who collapsed on the field and went into cardiac arrest during a Monday Night Football game on Jan. 2. It stirred Eddie’s memory because it was also in January that he went into cardiac arrest while playing in a recreational hockey league at HRM-4 Pad in Bedford.

“Keep in mind the timing of when I had the heart attack,” Eddie said, referring to the fact there was with about six minutes left in his game. “It gave the Capital Health team, the team coming on right after us, time to get to the rink, to be there. Now, had it happened six minutes into our game, I don't know if they would have been there ... probably not.”

“It was sort of like kind of a dam being opened again. I could feel immediate relief from that pressure when they were able to get to the blockage because, what they do is, they put a balloon in where the blockage is and then they inflate the balloon and that, sort of, opens up the artery again and then the blood starts flowing.

Eddie told me he had just recently joined this particular team. One of his new teammates was Jeff Matheson who said he was sitting next to Eddie as he collapsed on the bench.
