It is extraordinarily difficult for people with disabilities to find private taxi services in Ottawa. We don’t have enough \u0027adapted\u0027 vehicles.
Lifshitz is a man with a job who likes to go out, make other people laugh and generally live his life as he sees fit. Just like you and me. Except that unlike me and probably you, he uses a wheelchair.
When I caught up with him a few days after his ordeal, Lifshitz told me he owns his own adapted vehicle but because of a badly delayed medical procedure on his hip that’s causing him pain and also spasms that are difficult to control, he prefers not driving at the moment., it is extraordinarily difficult for people with disabilities to find private taxi services in Ottawa.
Why are we in this situation? A few reasons. One is that many people have quit work post-pandemic. It’s entirely possible that the operators of the accessible taxis that are in theory “available” aren’t working, or not working as much as they used to. As is their right. A bigger reason is that there are very few incentives for anyone to have accessible vehicles, which cost a lot more money than other cars to own and operate.
So basically we’re telling people such as Lifshitz that if they want to go out, they shouldn’t. “Out” is reserved for people who are able-bodied. Better luck next life.
