The Peel public school board has adopted a landmark strategy, saying it is the first in Canada to create a detailed plan to affirm Muslim identities and dismantle Islamophobia.
“It feels like a huge win, a historic moment and, really, like a turning point in our fight against Islamophobia, specifically withinspaces,” said Aasiyah Khan of the National Council of Canadian Muslims, which was part of the consultation process. “We’re really hoping that other boards take note.”
“Everyone is very excited but we’re also mindful that we need to continue to work to ensure that this does come to fruition,” said Khan, who was part of the team that came up with the 31-page document. It outlines various actions the PDSB can take. They include providing professional training to staff and trustees on the impacts of Islamophobia; ensuring Muslim students see themselves positively reflected in the curriculum; developing partnerships with community agencies that offer culturally appropriate referrals to services and resources; and implementing responsive hiring and practices that support racialized employees’ advancement into leadership roles.
In September 2021, the board passed a motion, introduced by then-trustee Nokha Dakroub, committing to the development of an anti-Islamophobia strategy. What followed were consultations with staff, students, families and community partners, including the Urban Alliance on Race Relations and the Council of Agencies Serving South Asians.
