Peel police are launching a pilot program that will see gender-based-violence experts partner with police to help intervene before intimate-partner disputes turn violent.
Under the new initiative announced Tuesday, Peel police’s 12 division will house two Safe Centre Response Teams comprised of a mobile support worker with experience in gender-based violence paired with a specially trained police constable. The teams will be available seven days a week to respond to intimate-partner incidents.
“It’s also about engaging and to get him help, so that he can find other ways of dealing with the frustration and attitudes that he holds around women,” she said. Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah said police took 17,000 calls for service related to family and intimate-partner violence in Peel Region in 2021.
Duraiappah said the plan is to create a safety net where non-criminal encounters, which can often be verbal disputes, don’t continue to fall between the cracks.
