On Friday, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May gave President Joe Biden a Peace by Chocolate chocolate bar. Here's a profile of the Hadhad family behind the company:

It’s been five years since Peace by Chocolate opened up for business in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Within that time, the chocolatier founded by a Syrian refugee family has celebrated several milestones, from getting a shout-out from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a speech to the United Nations to opening their first flagship store, in Halifax’s waterfront, just this spring.

Today, they have more than 60 confectionary offerings, which combine flavours from Syria with Canadian ingredients, like Nova Scotian wild blueberries and maple cream, to make one-of-a-kind artisanal chocolate. You can find the sweets sold nationwide at retailers like Sobeys and Foodland. “I could not comprehend that it was even possible,” reflects Hadhad about hearing from Keijser. The family even has a cameo in the film, which stars several Syrian actors they grew up watching, including the late Hatem Ali, who passed away in December.

That outlook also informed their approach to their business during an uncertain year. “Chocolate lifts the spirit and adds sweetness to hard times,” says Hadhad. In response to the pandemic, they launched the Mood Booster Box, a collection of bestsellers and favourites designed to brighten your day.
