On extra hot days, a variety of factors affect our 'feels like' temperature, or heat index, including humidity, wind and sky cover. However, different surfaces and terrain also influence it.
If your pet exhibits one or multiple of these symptoms, your first step should always be to remove them from the heat as quickly as possible. Put them on a cool surface, preferably in a shaded or air-conditioned area, and offer them fresh water. You may also use ice packs and cool, dampened towels. If symptoms persist or worsen, consider contacting an emergency veterinarian. If left untreated, heatstroke/exhaustion in pets can be fatal.
Finally, always let a professional groomer decide what kind of haircut is best for your pet. A nice trim can help keep them cool, but the ASPCA advises against shaving your animals. Without their protective coat, they can get sunburned and may overheat more easily. Unfortunately, it doesn't always take triple digits, or even 90s, for ground temperatures to become dangerously hot for our furry companions.
Therefore, you should always test the waters, or ground in this case, before taking your pet outside for a walk. You can do this by placing the back of your hand on the ground in direct sunlight and leaving it in place for at least 10 seconds.
