Michael DiPietro, the Vancouver Canucks’ goalie of the future, is as upbeat as ever after enduring a memorable season of change and learning curves.
Two days after his Ottawa 67’s completed a dominating second-round sweep of the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Hockey League playoffs, Mike DiPietro and his teammates were out helping local residents battle back flood waters that have threatened communities along the Ottawa River.
It’s been a big year in perspective for the Vancouver Canucks’ prospect: being traded from the only junior club and city he’s really ever known, playing in the world juniors, making his NHL debut, pushing for a Memorial Cup with his new team.Ottawa 67's help fill sandbags in Constance Bay. The talent that’s been assembled by general manager James Boyd and directed by head coach André Tourigny is formidable, but being able to remain focused mentally can be the biggest challenge for teams in their desired climb to elite status. “As the series wears on, it’s a grind where you’re constantly learning from the other team. Our coaches have done an extremely good job setting us up for the series, so we know what to expect … then our skill takes over. That’s where our success is.”
DiPietro dreamed of 45 saves and recording a shutout, not yielding seven goals, but that doesn’t matter, he insisted.
