takes place Saturday, when some 2,000 young masqueraders, from toddlers to 16-year-olds, will march in costume to soca music through the streets of Scarborough.
Last Sunday outside Scarborough Town Centre, London Christmas-Espinet, watched in anticipation as helpers wheeled out his costume — a huge bedazzled airplane on wheels with clouds and banners fanning out behind it. “We’re getting ready to fly,” one costume helper said to another as they completed last-minute alterations.
“I just feel wonderful,” London said, afterwards. He was nervously excited for the results to be announced — he won first place in his category — but he said winning wasn’t as important as being able to carry on tradition.
