The move is in response to a surge in cases in the country in the past month since Bejing lifted its lockdown and travel restrictions
Passengers travelling from China to the UK will need to show proof of a negative covid test before they board the plane after a u-turn from Rishi Sunak.
The measure will come into force before China allows international travel for its citizens from 8 January. But earlier this month the UK-based data firm Airfinity estimated that daily infections in China are running close to a million, with more than 5,000 deaths a day. But following concerns about a lack of transparency over data from China and low vaccine take-up in the country, the government has decided to introduce new testing rules.The UK is following the US, Japan, Italy and Taiwan in introducing testing rules, while Spain is also considering the measure.
